Hives from Juice???

Kjari has had the most bizarre hives comeing and going for a few weeks lately! I think I have discoved the culprit! Apple and Orange juice. We really don't drink much around here other then water and milk, but recently when she was sick she had to take an antibiotic, so I bought some apple juice to mix with it to give it to her. I hadn't noticed it much then but she was really only getting about a 1/8 of a cup with the medicine at a time. But of course since then she started asking for juice all the time. We started noticeing the hives last week. I bought some Orange juice this week, since we are all fighting off some colds, and thought we could all use the vitamin C. Well anyway slowly with out fail, after every drink of juice, more and more hives would appear. Who would have known! Benedryl always clears it up, and my doc didn't seem to concerned. So I am going to give it a day or so and give her some juice again, just to comfirm our suspicians. Anyone else out there ever experience this with there kids??

Mine wasn't juice, it was more foods (nuts, tomatoes, beans, rice, tuna fish). I would break out with hives and even had some nasty sores on my elbows if I got too much. I had to avoid anything I was allergic to. The good news is that I have outgrown most of them and as I got older there was less hives (I knew when I was getting to my limit of how much I could eat.) Hope she is doing alright. Where are you moving to this time? Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!

You'd be surprised what can cause an allergy in kids. The body just decides one day that it doesn't like something any more and you get an allergic reaction. Don't blow it off if no one has heard of it. Good Luck pinning things down.

Yes, with citrus-- orange, pineapple and grapefruit juices. Almost all of my children are reactive to citrus.

Good luck finding the culprit!

A true fruit allergy is very rare. About 90% of food allergies are from other foods. A true fruit allergy usually manifests in allergic reaction in or around the mouth. Hives would fall in that category of reaction. It may not be the fruit, it may be a pesticide used on the fruit or a chemical used in the production of the juice. Once you confirm the juice, try using organic fruit of the same type and see if the reaction changes or even reappears. Good Luck.
